LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Chris Cushing, Stantec
Presented to a distinguished individual whose lifelong dedication has significantly elevated the Brownfield industry. This unsung hero has tirelessly led, mentored and innovated, shaping transformative paths that have now become the bedrock of industry practices and policies.
Chris has been a pivotal leader within the Stantec Environmental Remediation team for several decades, earning respect for his technical expertise, exceptional communication skills, and daunting work ethic. His contributions have significantly advanced Stantec’s brownfield practice, supported the redevelopment of complex brownfields in Ontario, and elevated the careers of many junior staff. Chris’s ability to see the big picture while maintaining attention to detail, along with his practical guidance for integrating technical matters, earned him the Lifetime Achievement HUB Award.
INNOVATION AWARD
Karey Dow, Legacy Environmental
Presented to a recipient who has proven to be a pioneer at the forefront of technical innovation and novel approaches to brownfield redevelopment. These visionaries passionately create solutions across various facets of the brownfield space, developing tools that enhance lives. Karey is a leader in the BC environmental industry, known for her technical expertise and dedication to mentoring young professionals and shaping policies through her volunteer work on the Vancouver BC Institute of Agrologist board. She actively fosters brownfield redevelopment projects through the Urban Development Institute and leads a majority women-owned consulting firm, LEGACY Environmental. With over 20 years of experience in environmental consulting, Karey has provided project management, leadership, mentorship, and technical expertise on hundreds of projects, making her a deserving recipient of the Innovation HUB Award.
EMERGING LEADER
Hannah Chessell, Geosyntec Consultants
Presented to an emerging leader in the Brownfield Industry in Canada and who is a rising star offering valuable insights into programs, policies and practices that significantly propel the industry forward.
Hannah Chessel from Geosyntec. Hannah exemplifies the qualities of a rising star in the brownfield industry through her leadership, innovation, and community engagement. She has led Geosyntec’s internal professional geoscientist group, contributed to the P.Geo association, and presented regularly at conferences, while also mentoring early career professionals and promoting a culture of collective success. Her exceptional contributions to emerging remediation technologies and community initiatives make her a deserving recipient of the Emerging Leader HUB Award, recognizing her as a vital pillar in the advancement of brownfield practices and the revitalization of communities.
Congratulations to Chris, Karey, and Hannah
HUB Award winners for 2024 were presented with an I-Hos Art Gallery piece created by artist Brian Bob, a member of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations on Vancouver Island. Brian is known for his wood creations, truly keeping the tradition of his peoples in mind. Inspired by the legacy of his ancestors, he studied the work of his elders to learn the traditional techniques to the art of carving and has been perfecting it for the past 40 years. He loves his art and is constantly developing new designs.
