Brent Cox, Contaminated Sites Specialist, Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change

Brent Cox, B.Sc., P. Geo., is a Contaminated Sites Specialist with Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change.  Brent obtained his Bachelor of Science degree (Geology) from Saint Mary’s University in 1989. For over twenty years he served in the environmental consulting industry as a highly experienced Senior Environmental Project Manager.

As a representative of Nova Scotia Environment since 2017, Brent supports the implementation and ongoing maintenance/development of the Contaminated Sites Regulations, providing specialist advise, outreach and training to internal and external stakeholders. He has been a member of Atlantic PIRI (Partners In RBCA Implementation) since 2017, working to bring together regulators and regional stakeholders in a collaborative approach to regional harmonization of contaminated site management practices and continuous improvement of the Atlantic RBCA (Risk Based Corrective Action) toolkit.

 

Lisa Fairweather, Director, Land Conservation, Reclamation & Brownfield Redevelopment, Alberta Environment & Parks

Lisa Fairweather joined Alberta Environment and Parks as Brownfield Coordinator in 2016 and was awarded the Brownfielder of the Year award in 2017. She has since become Director of Land Conservation, Reclamation and Brownfield Redevelopment, responsible for remediation and reclamation policy.  She is looking forward to sharing Alberta’s work and learning from her colleagues at this great national event.

Dale Kristoff, Manager, Hazmat and Impacted Sites, Government of Saskatchewan 

Dale is currently the Manager of the Hazardous Materials and Impacted Sites Section with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment.  He has have worked as an Environmental Protection Officer and Provincial Hazardous Materials Coordinator for the province for more than 15 years.  In addition to regulating impacted sites, the section is responsible for delivery of the hazardous materials and waste dangerous goods storage program and the emergency response spill program for the province.

Dale has been involved in  on the development and implementation of numerous legislative and policy changes, including the Environmental Management and Protection Act, 2010 and the Saskatchewan Environmental Code.  In addition to impacted sites, Dale has been involved in the management of the northern Saskatchewan Non-Uranium Abandoned Mines program.

Prior to working for the government, Dale was principal in a small consultant firm specializing in a variety of work in northern Saskatchewan.

measurement tools, and knowledge mobilization approaches to guide decision-making and actions of government and the private sector.  Some highlights: Tammy sat on the Green Municipal Fund Council (The Federation of Canadian Municipalities) from 2005 - 2011 where she represented the brownfield and contaminated site sector providing strategic direction for the $550 Million fund and encouraged municipalities to initiate sustainable projects with significant environmental benefits; She is the recipient of the 2009 Canadian Urban Institute’s Brownie Award for Individual Achievement and 2019 HUB (Heroes Underpinning Brownfields) Award from the CBN; and Tammy is one of the founding members of the Canadian Brownfields Network and has been involved in the organization in various ways since its inception. Tammy is very excited to be taking on the role of Executive Director for the CBN and is looking forward to working with the Board, Committees, members, and stakeholder partners. 

 

Chris Lompart, Manager of Land Use Policy, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks

Chris Lompart is the Manager of Land Use Policy at the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

Chris has been with the Ministry for more than twenty years and has worked on environmental policy development for over 25 years in the public and non-government sectors.  Chris has spent much of that time working on brownfields redevelopment and excess soil policy as well as environmental planning and land use planning-related legislation, regulations, and policy, such as the Provincial Policy Statement and the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

Alan McCammon, Manager, Remediation Assurance, BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change

Alan McCammon is a member of the management team for the Land Remediation (Contaminated Sites) Section of British Columbia's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. His primary responsibilities focus on regulation of high-risk contaminated sites under the Environmental Management Act.  Alan has extensive experience as a statutory decision maker and regularly contributes to development of supporting policy and guidance for site remediation. In addition, Alan is presently appointed as Registrar for management of the Site Registry under the Act.  Alan is a registered professional geoscientist specializing in contaminant hydrogeology.

Pauline Pingusson, Project Officer, Capacity Development, Green Municipal Fund 

Pauline Pingusson completed her literary background with a diploma in management and a specialized master’s degree in Strategic Management of Sustainability in France. After a mission in an NGO in the United States, she worked at Utopies, the first French sustainability consultancy.

She developed her expertise in responsible consumption, socio-economic impact and sustainable higher education by running the network Campus Responsables (Sustainable Campuses) comprising approximately 40 universities in France and in Belgium. She offered her expertise in sustainability on multiple projects in Europe, as well as in Morocco, Tunisia, the UK and the USA. After moving to Canada, she joined the Green Municipal Fund at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to develop knowledge products and peer learning activities to help Canadian cities share best practices and become more sustainable. Pauline is in charge of managing a national network of local governments for the Leadership in Brownfield Renewal (LiBRe) program. She also explores circular economy and sustainable procurement opportunities for Canadian municipalities and designs and delivers capacity building activities, such as the pan-Canadian pilot “Circular Cities and Regions Initiative”.

As a professional engineer, Eric is well known for his extensive experience in brownfield redevelopment and environmental / remedial design solutions. Eric also serves as a senior technical peer reviewer for the entire Project Management team. Under his leadership, Milestone has experienced exponential growth, and has led to Milestone being ranked and listed as one of Canada’s 500 fastest growing company in 2019, by the Canadian Business and Maclean Magazines GROWTH 500.

Eric is also active in our community; he is past President of the Canadian Brownfields Network and past Chair of the HR MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver. He has held leadership roles across Canada in Brownfield groups and environmental firms. He led the development of the BC Toolkit for former Service Stations; including delivery of a series of Brownfield Design Charettes for six BC municipalities with the BC Brownfield Renewal Strategy. He was recognized by the Canadian Urban Institute as the Brownfielder of the Year for his work.

He is responsible of several private and public accounts for environmental remediation projects and initiatives for various industries, indigenous communities, all levels of government and agencies throughout Canada. He is Director for serval Indigenous joint ventures with Milestone. He served as a member of the BC Ministry of Environment task force on soil relocation for large receiving sites.

Josée Samson, ing., M.Sc.A., Section engineer, Service de l’environnement, City of Montréal

Josée Samson is a geological engineer who graduated from Laval University in 1986 and who completed a master's degree from École Polytechnique in civil engineering, environment section in 1989.

At the beginning of her career, she worked for consulting firms located in Niagara Falls and Montreal as an engineer specializing in contaminated soils. In 1992, she started to work for the City of Montréal where she supervised site characterization, remediation plans as well as risk assessment for various brownfields projects . She worked in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in solving problems related to the presence of contaminated soils. Since 2008, she heads a dedicated team of specialists that strive to innovate in the field  of site remediation with the public’s best interest always in mind, providing support to all municipal services and boroughs to establish guidelines in the management of contaminated soils. She also participates in the establishment, of remediation programs funding with the MELCC (ministry of environment). She is recognized by the City of Montréal as one of the ten scientists with an exceptional degree of knowledge in their respective scientific discipline.

 

Peter Sutton, VP, Environmental Services, Terrapex & Co-Chair, CBN Technical Advisory Committee (TAC)

Peter Sutton is a member of the Board of Directors of Canadian Brownfields Network, and Co-Chair of CBN’s Technical Advisory Committee.   A licensed professional engineer and designated "Consulting Engineer" in the Province of Ontario, Peter is also registered with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks as a “Qualified Person” for both the filing Records of Site Condition (QPESA) and the submission of Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessments (QPRA) per O. Reg. 153/04.

Peter is currently Vice President, Environmental Services at Terrapex, a firm of consulting engineers and scientists providing consulting services in the environment, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, building science and health and safety.  In this role he oversees the environmental site assessment and remediation, environmental risk assessment, ecology, and hazardous materials service lines at Terrapex. In addition, he continues to provide high level consulting services in the areas of environmental site assessment, soil and groundwater remediation, risk assessment, and Brownfield redevelopment, as well as peer review / expert opinion services to clients in support of due diligence efforts, civil litigation matters, and subrogation claims related to soil and groundwater contamination.

Dean’s career with the Ontario government spans almost 20 years, at both the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and the Ministry of Finance. He is a graduate of the University of Guelph with a degree in Environmental Biology from the Ontario Agricultural College.

 

Paul Welsh, Brownfield Program Coordinator, Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks

Paul Welsh is the Brownfield Program Coordinator at the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks. His role is to oversee the risk assessment program that enables site-specific standards to be used to support Brownfields redevelopment under the Ministry’s Brownfield regulation. Paul is an environmental toxicologist with extensive experience with contaminated site assessment, ecological and human health risk assessment, and standards development.
